However, there are critical incoherencies between the forest-related policies at the European level and their implementation in the regions in the member states. Goals The main objective of the four-year project INTEGRAL is to bring the landscape dimension closer to Europe. At the same time, the project provides demand-driven information for European policy decision makers on the challenges in forest management in 20 regions throughout Europe. INTEGRAL Final Conference INTEGRAL final conference “SUSTAINABLE AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL FOREST MANAGEMENT IN EUROPE: ACHIEVEMENTS, CHALLENGES AND FUTURE POLICY OPTIONS” The INTEGRAL final conference, held in Brussels on June 24-25, 2015, has focused on the future-oriented and integrated management of forest landscapes in Europe. During the two day event, over 110 participants from more than 15 countries shared knowledge, experiences and solutions, creating a wide range of networking opportunities and resulting in policy relevant recommendations to support sustainable and multifunctional forest management. A series of cutting-edge keynote speeches, given by high-level representatives of various Directorates General of the European Commission and the European Parliament as well as lectures from internationally renowned scientists contributed to the success of the conference. Furthermore, interactive sessions enabled a lively discussion on ongoing forest-related political developments and the possibilities of implementing integrative forest policy concepts such as 'sustainable forest management' and 'multifunctional forestry' in forest-related landscapes in Europe. The world café session MINI EUROPE provided an extensive insight into four years of research on current and future policies and scientifically based findings on socio-economic and ecological drivers and barriers of change in integrated forest land-use in twenty landscapes across ten European countries. In working group discussions, the conference participants have explored issues concerning integration and balance between forestry and other sectors, including rural development, nature conservation and bioenergy at the European level. The conference outcomes have enriched the INTEGRAL EU Policy Paper.
